  • As cases of Covid-19 increase in Tokyo, which is under a fourth state of emergency, the public is increasingly concerned that hosting an event with thousands of athletes, Officials and foreign journalists could speed up infection rates in the Japanese capital and introduce more infectious or deadly variants. Tokyo 2020 organizers have reported 58 positive cases among athletes, officials and journalists since July 2, according to a Reuters report. Tokyo is expected to host around 11,000 athletes and thousands of other team officials at the height of the Games. Tokyo reported 1,008 new cases of COVID-19 on July 18, the fifth day in a row with more than 1,000 cases.

No fan, Japanese or foreign, will be allowed to participate in Olympic sports in Tokyo and the three neighboring prefectures.
