I had a “painful experience” while filming the movie “Barbie”
It certainly wasn’t “fantastic” before filming “Barbie” for Simu Liu.
The ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ star, 33, has revealed he’s undergone a painful beauty regimen for the upcoming film, admitting he had to remove all his body hair.
“Waxing has been an education, to say the least,” Liu told the Independent in a new profile. “It was one of the most painful experiences of my life.”
The Canadian native continued, “I have such admiration for the incredibly brave women who go through this every month.”
Warner Bros. posted a first image of Margot Robbie smiling in a hot pink convertible last month on the “Barbie” set.
Robbie, 31, stars as a live-action version of Mattel’s plastic blonde figure alongside Liu, America Ferrera, Ryan Gosling as his toy Ken, plus Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp and Will Ferrel.
Liu also gushed about the love from fans surrounding the film and noted that he’s excited for viewers to see it on the big screen when it’s released next summer.
“Honestly, online speech gives me life,” he said. “Every casting announcement or news they say, ‘What is this?’ And that’s perfect – the less you know, the better.
The ‘We Were Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story’ memoirist also told the UK edition of GQ earlier this month that his agent helped him fall in love with the ‘Barbie’ storyline because he said that the “Barbie” script was one of the best scripts his agent had ever read and passed them on to Liu for review.
“He literally said that verbatim,” Liu explained. “He was like, ‘If I could bet my career on any script, it’s the ‘Barbie’ script. I really think you should.”
The “Kim’s Convenience” actor sent an audition to director and screenwriter Greta Gerwig, who is co-writing the project with filmmaker and partner Noah Baumbach.
The 38-year-old ‘Little Women’ director then asked Liu to come for a meeting, where she said “how much she loved watching men dance, because it’s such an artistic expression that you don’t you’re not used to seeing in typical men.” He revealed he had a history of working with a hip-hop dance troupe.
He added that Gerwig “burst out laughing audibly, she screamed laughing – and then I got the part”.
“Barbie” is set to hit theaters on July 21, 2023.
