Not to flex, but I’d say I’m damn good at first dates. After years on the front lines of the battlefield which is the New York dating scene, I definitely have the first dates to a science – to the point where, even if I decide my date is not a good game, I stay end up having a ball. Now that I’m all boo’d up, it’s finally time to pass on my biggest tip, most of which is about dating card games.

Before you call me boring, know that I am, in fact, the opposite of boring. The! Now that we’ve purged the air, let me say why I love hanging out with card games so much. On a first date I always make sure to mention my favorite card game, We’re Not Really Strangers, as one of my favorite things.

What is it about, my dates are still asking. I tell them it’s a card game filled with hard-hitting questions designed to spark really deep conversations – and it’s really, really fun to play while drinking with someone you don’t know very well.

Reader, every damn date then asks me to bring the cards to our next date. Sometimes they even moved our date to a bar closer to my apartment so I could go get the game and drop it! From there, playing the game allows us to skip small talk and jump right into some really interesting and insightful conversations. Even though I find that we don’t vibrate as potential future mates, we still have a great time playing the game, drinking wine, and opening up.

How did I know my current partner was the one who won the capital B title of “boyfriend”? A few dates in, he surprised me with a gift: Let’s go deep, a super similar card game that he knew I would enjoy after playing WNRS. Ladies, do you find a man who listens!
