As AWS drops, many of the world’s most popular games are unavailable

UPDATE 1:30 PM ET / 6:30 PM GMT: According to the official AWS Dashboard: “Several AWS APIs in the US-EAST-1 region are affected. This issue also affects some of our monitoring and incident response software, causing delays in delivering updates. We have determined the cause of the problem and are working to resolve it.

Original story below.

The number of outage complaints is dropping, and some websites, like Facebook and Disney Plus, are almost back to normal.

Amazon Web Services is by far the largest server or cloud computing company on the planet: in April 2021, it accounted for 32% of the $ 42 billion cloud computing market. Today AWS has gone down and the rest at the time of writing – we’ll update when that changes – and an absolute set of other platforms that depend on its service are also now unavailable.

League of Legends

You can monitor the outage here, and as this page shows, the AWS issues destroyed the following dominoes:

League of Legends Savage Rift

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

Valorant dead in the light of day

Clash of Clans Destiny 2

The list goes on. Platforms like UPlay and the Epic Games Store are down, while mega-publishers like Bethesda are also affected. AWS boasted in 2019 that over 90% of the world’s largest game companies were using its services, so it’s hard to be exact on how many games will be affected in one way or another: many. AWS appears to have stopped working around 3:24 PM GMT (7:24 AM PT), the outage appears to be US-based, and the AWS Support account has yet to resolve the issue or its severity.

Needless to say, this isn’t just impacting the gaming world: Amazon’s own services like Prime Video are down, while other big players like Disney +, Tindr, and Capital One are suffering. Most notably, Amazon’s website itself will not allow product searches: at this time of year in particular, it will lose millions of dollars per minute. We have contacted AWS for comment and will update with any response.
