107 translations completed, 13 books; Sadasivan is still busy writing | International Translation Day | Deputy Sadasivan
Thiruvananthapuram: 84-year-old veteran writer MP Sadasivan has translated up to 107 books to date. The printed pages will total 45,000. His work has found a place in the Limca Book of Records.
Over 95 percent of Sadasivan’s works are translations from English to Malayalam. However, he also translated from Tamil and Hindi. His works fall into different categories such as fiction, poetry, biography, economics, astrology and children’s literature. He translated 50 pages a day.
It was DC Kizhakemuri who discovered the talent of Sadasivan who began his career translating ‘Sherlock Holmes: The Red-Headed League’. When the appointed translator of KR Narayanan’s book âImages and Insightsâ withdrew from the project, DC gave it to Sadasivan, who completed the 200-page book in 6 days.
Sadasivan has translated books by Noam Chomsky, Amartya Sen, APJ Abdul Kalam, Arundhati Roy, Khushwant Singh and many more. ‘Thousand and One Nights’ which was completed in 8 months is Sadasivan’s favorite work.
Besides translations, Sadasivan has also written 13 books. A novel written during the lockdown linked to Covid-19 has not yet been published. He won the Kerala Sahithya Akademi and Kerala Bhasha Institute Awards and the Union Ministry of Culture Senior Fellowship.
Sadasivan, who was a Senior Audit Officer in the Office of the Accountant General, is retiring in Thiruvananthapuram.
